Tempting route for chancy "andinistas" that do not doubt to challenge the climate and the height in their desire of reaching the summit of the Cotopaxi, the highest active volcano in the world.

Driving south from Quito on the Pan-American Highway, the turn off to reach this snow capped volcano is soon after the Clirsen station. This takes about an hour and a half from Quito. Be sure to wear warm clothing, as it can be quite cool. The dirt road and the gradual climb up to the snow line is an extremely interesting trip.
There is a refugee located near the snow line (4.800 m.) that you can reach walking.
